As I’m putting the finishing touches on my ebook, How to Have Your Cake and Eat It, Too — all about being a mother and pursuing your own passions — I’m reposting some of my favorite posts from the archives! If you want to be notified when the ebook is ready, just submit your email address here.

There are plenty of posts around the blogosphere about why you should take the time to plan your menu, but we’re going to look at the top ten reasons you shouldn’t.

10. You’re a non-comformist by nature, and since meal plans are popular, you refuse to give in.

9. You like to spend your free time staring blankly at the pantry trying to come up with dinner ideas. It’s like a hobby.

8. You prefer the “seek and you shall find” method of mealtime. You stock the shelves and the fridge, and your family is required to seek-and-find their meals there.

7. You like to test your cooking skills by looking through the cabinets at 5:15 and creating a gourmet meal out of the random ingredients you find.

6. Your family enjoys having the same 7 meals every week, so there’s no need for a menu plan.

5. You’re a free spirit and refuse to be bogged down with “organization” of any kind.

4. You want to be able to blame an empty refrigerator and pantry when you tell your extended family they can’t drop by at dinnertime.

3. The grocery store is your “happy place” and you like making extra trips to pick up last-minute ingredients.

2. You want to do your part to boost the economy by spending lots of money at the grocery store, even if the food goes bad before you use it.

1. You like to use the excuse “We don’t have anything to eat” as a reason to go out to dinner.

What are your reasons for not menu planning?

I have fallen victim to all 10 reasons in one form or another and yet I still do meal planning!

I don’t put a specific day on it though… I do the weekly shopping around the “deals” and plan the meals that will go with the items and use them up in order of: 1) perishability and 2) how much time I have to make dinner (Tuesdays are frantic so it has to be something quick, but Fridays can be a long luxurious cooking day)

(The grocery store IS my happy place, but only 1-2 times a week)

Rats, thought you were going to be serious. Sorry to say I still hate menu planning more than I hate staring at the frig at the end of the day wondering what to eat.

Now that I have adult children, I’m actually a little more free-flowing in my meal plans, but I do have them. I also keep the pantry stocked with essentials so if there’s a big change in my plans, I have meals I can fix.

I like shopping everyday and walk by the market on my way home. Shopping for food is one of those necessitates in life, so I find that it’s different from to other types of shopping since most other types are for “wants” and not “needs”. It is also too much effort and robotic to plan for a whole week.

Every excuse here applies to me at one point or another in the past 25 years. And now I can add one:

    11. I let my grown daughters take turns cooking most of the meals. And when my night comes, I serve leftovers. No meal planning needed at all!

I walk to the store every day to buy food for the day. Its good exercise and it helps us not waste and find great deals. Menu planning works for some people. But we have tried it several times and it just doesn’t work for our family.

I have to plan menu’s 2 months in advance for work, so I don’t at home. My planning ahead means getting 3 or 4 meats out of the freezer. Whatever is the most thawed out gets eaten first, then when thawed, whatever has been in the longest gets picked. I plan our meals around that.

In all seriousness, have you ever tried Plan to Eat? I used to hate menu
planning (although I still did it), but with Plan to Eat, it literally takes
me 10-12 minutes to plan out my meals for the week and print my shopping
list, and I’m set. It’s made a huge difference for me!

Thanks so much, Jenna — I’m so glad to hear that!

It sounds like you have a system, even if it’s not a traditional one.
    Whatever works!

Living in the boonies, this definitely isn’t an option for me, but I can
see how that could be an enjoyable way to do it if it’s part of your daily
    routine. Thanks for sharing!

Number 3 is for me the grocery store is my happy place

  • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

LOL! Is that because it’s quiet and away from the stress of a busy
    household?

Actually, I went in a Wegman’s for the first time this weekend and holy
guacamole is that a nice place. If all grocery stores were like that, #3
might be true for a lot more people!
