Ingredients to Avoid in the Food You Eat

Ingredients to Avoid

source: aMichiganMom

Let me start by saying that I’m writing this post as much for myself as for you.

We probably eat healthier than the “average” American, but not by much, and I know we still have a long way to go in embracing a more natural, whole foods diet for our family.

Changing your diet is never easy, and for someone who doesn’t enjoy cooking (or cleaning up the disaster she leaves in her wake when she does cook) and isn’t really very good at it, it’s even harder.

That said, I’ve found that it’s actually pretty easy to begin eliminating questionable ingredients as long as I focus on one at a time.

Here are 9 ingredients we have either eliminated or are working to eliminate from our diets:

High Fructose Corn Syrup

The use of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as an additive has been linked to the rise in obesity, heart disease, diabetes and fatty liver disease. This is one ingredient that we avoid almost completely, even though it’s found in a ton of products. We opt for real sugar in products such as cereal bars and fruit yogurt, which is thankfully easier now than it was even a year ago. (We’ll talk more about sugar consumption in another post!)

MSG

MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a flavor enhancer typically added to East Asian cuisine and dry soup such as Ramen Noodles. There are no scientific studies conclusively linking MSG to health concerns, but anecdotal evidence continues to suggest that it may be linked to obesity, migraines, food allergies and hyperactivity.

Bleached and Enriched White Flour

Most white breads, crackers and baked goods are made primarily from bleached and enriched white flour.  This flour has been processed to make it softer and whiter, literally through a chemical bleaching process that removes all of the nutrients. Four of the original fifteen vitamins are then artifically added back in. White flour has been linked to obesity and constipation and is associated with an unhealthy rise and fall of blood sugar levels that keeps many people on a binge-eating rollercoaster.

Eliminating white flour is not easy, especially for people with pickier palates who dislike the texture of wheat flour, but we’ve been able to start making changes in this area by slowly replacing the white flour in our recipes with portions of whole wheat flour. Amy from Progressive Pioneer shared her tips for increasing whole wheat flour in your diet recently at the Plan to Eat blog.

Trans Fats

Trans fats are created when oil is partially hydrogenated, and these are often found in fast food, baked goods, snack foods and some margarines. Because trans fats both lower your good cholesterol and raise your bad cholesterol, most people agree that they should be avoided. Fortunately, like HFCS, more and more food manufactures are moving away from the use of trans fats in their products.

Food Dyes

With growing concern that food dyes are contributing to hyperactivity, other behavioral issues in children and cancer, the FDA has scheduled meetings for March to discuss these links. We haven’t yet taken steps to eliminate food dyes from our diet (other than reducing them simply by reducing the processed food that we eat), but I have wondered whether they might be contributing to some of our oldest’s behavior, so this is on my list to look into more. Read more about food dyes at the Feed Our Families blog.

Nitrites

Nitrites are used as preservatives in cured meats and hotdogs. These days, they’re mostly used to preserve the pinkish-red color of meats since the natural brown color is not appetizing to consumers. However, there are strong links indicating that the consumption of nitrites may lead to an increased risk of childhood cancer. Many stores now carry nitrite-free alternatives, although the flavor and color may be different from what your family is used to.

Artifical Sweeteners

The use of artificial sweeteners has never really sat right with me. Maybe it was that I knew the saccharin in my grandfather’s beloved TaB soda  had been linked to cancer at one time, or maybe it was that aspartame always gave my mom headaches or that Splenda is essentially made by replacing hydrogen-oxygen atoms in sugar with chlorine (chlorine!) atoms. Either way, our family has never consumed artificial sweeteners, and I’m not sure I could be convinced to add them. I am, however, currently researching natural alternatives to sugar, such as stevia, and I’ll share more about that in the coming months!

Although our family still has a ways to go in improving our diet and making healthier choices (said as I lick the last bit of my store-bought ice cream sandwich off my fingers), I do believe that ingredients listed above represent potential dangers, especially for our children and especially when consumed in high quantities.

I’m not sure we need to run right out and throw all of the food in our cabinets away and swear never to consume them again, but by identifying one ingredient at a time and focusing our efforts on reducing or limiting its presence in our food, we can take steps toward a healthier future.

What ingredients do you avoid? Are you surprised by any of the items on this list? Would you add any others?

We have eliminated all of these from our diet and don’t miss them one bit. I am so glad the food industry is coming around and offering products without these things. I know their bottom line was hurting but I am happy to find more and more products without hfcs and dyes. We eat probably 85-90% whole foods diet but we do buy some processed foods. It has become easier.

Thanks so much for chiming in Karen! It sounds like we have similar
approaches, and I hope to be able to say the same thing in a few months.

I found a natural alternative I really love. It’s called Stevia Cane. It’s just pure stevia with pure sugar and brings down the calories in a serving to 5. In my coffee, I can barely tell the difference. It’s really good. The other stevia stuff all has additives that didn’t seem right either. Why add chemicals to something natural? Duh! Also, LOVE agave. It’s still got the calories but it doesn’t cause the insulin spike that sugar does. :-)

To be honest, the sugar alternatives post has been on my list to do forever
and trying to sort through all the options and information is one thing
that’s kept me from making too many changes myself or posting it, so I
appreciate hearing from “real” people about what they use or don’t use –
thanks so much for chiming in!

Way to go Mandi! A great start to helping you and your familly (blog and otherwise) feel better and live better. It becomes really fascinating when you start to look into all the amazing foods that are out there! Thanks for the post

    • Anonymous

Thanks, Selena — you’re always such an encouragement!

  • http://www.feedourfamiliesblog.com/ Gina

Good for you, Mandi! We took all of thees – plus dairy for my son’s sensitivity – out of our family’s diet about two years ago and have not once considered giving in. The positive changes we’ve felt, and seen in their behavior and sleep, is SO worth it!

Thanks for the shout out to my food dye article at Feed Our Families. Let me know if you need any help along the way with removing these ingredients!

Our youngest daughter is actually being tested for various allergies right
now (they’ve started with a RAST test rather than putting her through the
pin pricks to start) to try to figure out what’s going on with her. Dairy is
definitely one of her triggers; we just haven’t figured out if it’s actually
an allergy yet. All of that to say that we may be following in your
footsteps, and I may just take you up on your offer!

  • http://www.facebook.com/mom2mykiddos Karen Kelly Sunderland

A few years ago, we began eliminating HFCS. Back then, it was in EVERYTHING! Now, I saw in Rachel Ray’s magazine, 35% of shoppers avoid products containing HFCS. That would explain why it’s become much easier to find everything from (still-terrible-for-you) soda to (no-better-for-you) pancake syrup without it!

Avoiding trans-fat has been a by product of cleaning up our diet also. Our next undertaking is whole wheat flour. We really just do NOT like whole wheat tortillas or pancakes! So, it’s baby steps here….

    • Anonymous

I still find myself getting excited when I pick up a product and it doesn’t
have HFCS in it just because for so long it seemed like everything did!

We do our pancakes with half whole wheat and half white — have you tried
      that?

  • Kate

We ♥ agave syrup. I’ll even use it on pancake or french toast in place of syrup. I recently also found a healthier version of log cabin syrup. It use brown rice syrup and maple syrup instead of HFCS. I find the winter months are harder to stay all natural b/c there is less local produce.

    • Anonymous

It took me a while to be willing to give up my Log Cabin syrup (although I
was happy when I found the HFCS-free version). Now I love maple syrup,
though. I’ve even started using it in recipes (like homemade whipped
cream…mmm!), and it’s such an easy alternative. I actually have a bottle
of agave syrup in my baking drawer that I’ve never opened. Pathetic! I may
have to pick your brain on Friday!

Thank you for this post. So many real food posts make you feel guilty if you haven’t quit everything cold turkey. It’s nice to hear that I’m not the only one easing my way into healthier shopping. :D

Thanks for chiming in, Shaina — I’ll admit I was a little nervous throwing
that out there, so I really appreciate your comment!

Most of the time I’m convinced that I have a sensitivity to MSG. Sometimes I’m a bit dizzy and look at the ingredient list on the can, bag or TV dinner (I don’t eat or cook with those much anymore since I’m a SAHM), and there’s MSG. Other times I’m absolutely fine even with MSG in the food. So not sure if it’s psychological or not.
Also love pastry wheat flour (Bob’s Red Mill) for baking!!

It’s hard to say, but I think with so many people reporting symptoms,
      something’s not right, you know?

I haven’t tried pastry wheat flour, but I’m intrigued — thanks so much for
      mentioning it!

Rather than focus on each ingredient – which I found to be overwhelming – I try to shop the outside of the grocery – produce, meat, dairy, bakery items (from the actual bakery though – not mass produced). This isn’t fool proof and I still dash into the aisles for cereal, pasta and Annie’s mac and cheese (can’t go cold turkey on it all!) and some other items…but overall I am happy with what I bring home to eat and think it is a good deal healthier than when I diligently wen up and down each aisle.

    • Anonymous

That’s a great strategy, Tan — thanks for sharing!

I do a decent job of avoiding these at home. Any tips for doing so when eating out? That I’ve found to be a challenge.

    • Anonymous

No, I’m afraid I’m not at a point where I’m ready to take that on yet, but
I’m guessing for now the best bet is to avoid chain restaurants and dine at
smaller, local restaurants where you can get to know the chef!

Yeah! I’m working on this list too and we are also very salt conscious. Love the Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – makes a very neat swap for all-purpose flour in recipes. Also really like the LaTortilla Factory brand whole wheat tortillas. I’m not sold on Agave Nectar though – they say it’s just as refined as HFCS. http://www.foodrenegade.com/agave-nectar-good-or-bad/

    • Anonymous

Okay, two votes for whole wheat pastry flour; it’s on my list! I think that
I actually read something similar about agave nectar right after I bought my
bottle, and that’s why I haven’t worked too hard to use it! I definitely
      want to research it more.

I am sentimental and perfectionistic. I do declutter when frustrated but I always regret something I trashed because I just wanted it out of the way.

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

You are one of the most sentimental people I know (and I love it about you
because I think it is the part of your heart that truly cares for people in
a special way), so I can see this happening for you. Me, not so much. LOL!

  • Anonymous

I think this might work well for areas that are in a mama’s control but will not work for areas where other people, spouses and children, have a stake. Unfortunately, this applies to most every area of my house! You cannot de-clutter out of frustration in children’s rooms. Tried it, all it leads to is tears and stress.

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

When I get frustrated and declutter the children’s areas out of frustration,
I just involved them. We need to share x number of toys with other children
because they’re overflowing out of the cabinet (the space we have for toys),
or we need to choose 3 special pictures to keep, 3 to mail to grandpa and
grandma and the ones that aren’t special to throw away. By involving them –
and because I’ve done it from a young age — there’s no tears or
      frustration!

      • Anonymous

I must be thinking of frustration in a different sense. Because when I’m frustrated I’m not peaceful, or calm. And this affects the kids. I need to be in a very “zen” space when we declutter kids rooms. Glad you have a system that works for you and you can use your frustration creatively and constructively.

  • Suzanna

I always would clean my room as a kid when I was sobbing over decisions my parents made that I was sure were completely unjust. :) Now, when I feel upset or my mind is in turmoil I head strait for my closet and make a goodwill pile. It’s a healing thing to me.

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

Me too, Suzanna! That sums it up perfectly!

  • Anonymous

This is so true! I’m much better about purging when I’m frustrated, too, since I have less patience to deal with storing something unnecessarily!

  • http://www.blessyourhearteh.blogspot.com Christy

I do clean and declutter when upset. In fact, it’s not advisable to be in my way when this happens! I do agree that kid’s rooms require quiet, mommy zen though. :)

Whenever I’m stressed it always has a lot to do with the clutter! It’s funny how sometimes I just look at the clutter and am stressed instead of releasing the stress and start cleaning!

  • Mandi S.

I do too. And once I get going, I’m practically unstoppable, and I know that I should try to purge as much as I can when I am in that mood. It’s really quite effective.

I totally and absolutely agree… I need a little crankiness to really get rid of stuff, no regrets, I always just need a little push to get started!!! Nick nacks …my worst to have, get rid of, receive… When I am cranky they just fly out of the house!!! We are decluttering books this week…in a major way and seriously it is just the frustration of keeping them all in order that is sending them out. As I sit amongst heaps of books with each kid…”Do you love it or not?” and it goes onto the shelf or in the box… Last week we did papers: “Do you love it or not…” File or recycle…repeat, repeat, repeat… I tell you after a school year after watching things build up in the name of getting school done I am frustrated with the mountains of build up!!! I need to figure a way to do this more often and yet not spend all our midterm breaks decluttering…

  • http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com/ Joyce

I do a little of both, but I get rid of more clutter when I’m frustrated. =p

  • http://delightinginthedays.com Stacy

This is me right now. In fact, I clicked over here with the hopes of finding some new organizational post to ponder while I went about the house throwing things out. I’m frustrated! And it’s the perfect time to declutter :)

  • http://softthistle.net Marylin

Yep, I’ve noticed I do the same thing! :)

  • http://organizingforeveryone.blogspot.com/ Elise

Definitely! And I also declutter when I’m stressed out. Organizing and clearing out clutter calms me.

I can see how this would be productive, however I might need to be a little careful. If I am frustrated, I might get rid of stuff and I might regret it later, lol! I envision myself just emptying drawers into the garbage!
Good luck on the book, you are in the stretch, of this phase anyway!

    Are we there yet?

I agree, I think it’s always best to declutter when your mind is clear and free. However, I can see the poing of decluttering when frustrated as well.

      • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

Hi Sharon! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Do you think it’s best to
declutter when your mind is clear and free because of the same thing Bernice
said — that you don’t want to have regrets? Or do you think there are other
benefits to waiting until you’re not frustrated?

I’ve never once regretted something I’ve gotten rid of (or at least not
regretted it enough that I can think of it now), but I’m a fairly
unsentimental person, so I’m sure that’s part of it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/StacksAndStacks Clutter Control-Freak

I tend to be that way too. That’s why I keep the “toss” box in the garage for a couple of weeks before letting it go permanently. That way, if I truly regret tossing something, I have time to retrieve it. But ONLY if I must have it. :)

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

      Yep, great tip!

  • Helen

Hardest area is the garage because we usually end up dumping everything out of the car onto the workbench or whatever clear space we have left in the garage. We forget about it until we go back to the car and see all the stuff there, but then we don’t have time to clean.

  • Stacey

The kitchen table is mine too! Bills, school papers, magazines…it gets out of control!

  • Erica Reed2010

Gotta be my craft/sewing room… so much random “stuff”… so many projects in progress… so much chaos…

  • Lid579

My kids’ rooms are the hardest for me to organize. They tend to collect stuff, drop stuff instead of putting it away, and generally keep their rooms looking like a whirlwind blew through it.

  • Dianeh1228

My worst clutter problem is the mail! It seems to always be growing piles around me!

  • guest

The hardest place for me to keep organized is the kitchen counter. I have no problem keeping my stuff clean there but my husband uses it as a catch all for mail, toys, anything that has no other ‘home’. I just can’t get him to get his stuff off the counter.

  • Jill

My desk/craft area is the hardest to keep organized b/c it is in a small corner of my den.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julia-Chacon-Larson/1409671844 Julia Chacon-Larson

the absolute hardest area for me to organize is my desk/scrap/craft area. I just need someone to come in and take over

We have an office where all of our clutter ends up. We have regular office supplies, but also leftover things from all over the house for when we clean up when we have company.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=531654848 Maria Smith

I really wish I could pick a hardest area but they’re all hard for me. I worry about becoming a hoarder because of my inability to throw anything away.

  • Rsb0909

My desk is the hardest. I get to where I can start seeing the top of it and then it gets buried again.

  • Karinahouse

I struggle with clutter in my kitchen, on the table, counters and in the pantry.

  • Rjmes01

The worst area for me is my room – I tend to throw anything and everything in there to “clean up” the rest of the house.

  • Teresa Garrett

The hardest area for me to keep organized and clean is surfaces! I’m always using table tops as catch-alls for magazines, bills, mail, you name it!

  • http://hippoflambe.com Robin (Hippo Flambe)

I feel like the whole house is an issue for me. Really I have trouble making an organized space for everything to be stored in. If I had that I could be much more clutter free (plus I need to go through and get rid of the things we don’t need).

Biggest issues right now, toys and clothes.

    Robin

  • Kathi

The kitchen counter where all the mail, and extra stuff lands. I never know where to put the stuff and the mail just stacks up.

  • ShakleeLady

The hardest things for me to keep organized is the kitchen counter and the kids toys . . . if I can keep those two spaces under control, I feel pretty good!

  • BA Mom

The kids rooms …. stuff comes in and nothing seems to go out! It doesn’t help that they are all girls, stair stepped in age by 3 years so some of the stuff needs to be hand-me-downs but some just needs to go to the curb when they are through with it!

  • Kari

Since we don’t have a room to use as an “office,” it is hard to manage bills, papers, computer stuff, etc.

I SOOOO need this! My apartment is tiny, so the entire thing is hard for me to organize.

  • http://twitter.com/soonermomof7 Joann O’Neil

Bedrooms are the hardest for our family to organize. Mine has remained a mess since my mother occupied it before her death in 2004. It’s a mixture of her stuff and ours. I’m at a loss on where to start. It’s the same the other bedrooms…kids clothes, toys, out of season items, blankets, etc.

  • Holly

We moved in when I was almost due to deliver my son, now five, and we have a whole bedroom stacked with things we never unpacked after the move and things we don’t have a spot for. We have also added a daughter who is now three. There is just too much stuff! When I get one spot organized, it falls apart in three months.

I have yet to feel that this is totally my home and it has never been totally organized.

  • Norma

You just can’t imagine how desperately I NEED this book! I used to be so well organized, but somewhere along the way I became overwhelmed and lost it! I guess the worst is all the paper clutter- basically any flat surface is covered with it! Thanks for the chance.

  • http://twitter.com/goonyburd Nancy

Everywhere? But especially, like Berni, the table and kitchen counter… So much paper and junk

  • Sharon C.

Paper is my biggest problem. Even after standing over a garbage container to sort mail, I still have problems with other kinds of paper. Paper at the computer workstation seems to be the next worse place.

  • Catherine

I have two ‘hot spots’. Our home office (I share it with my husband) and the kitchen counters. Ugh.

  • http://www.clutterqueenk.wordpress.com/ Kristen Harley

I have to isolate ONE area that is my worst for organization? My children’s rooms are the least organized even though we have purchased shelving and organizers – the problem is TOO much stuff, my boys collect Star Wars, and the collection is huge. We’re working on a room just for this collection, but it’s slow going. I’ve started a blog to try to keep myself motivated and accountable for the clutter in my life. I need this book. Clutter prevents me from enjoying the activities that keep a mom sane, I spend too much time decluttering and tidying, than enjoying life.

  • Teri

Our bedroom is by far the most cluttered place in the house, because it has become the dumping ground for mail, important papers, clean and dirty clothes, etc. When we need to put things down somewhere out of reach (so the kids can’t get it) or out of sight (we usually keep our door closed), it ends up in our room.

  • Denise

I find that our garage is one of the most difficult areas of our home to organize and keep organized. It’s sort of this drop off point on the way in from the children riding their bicycles, scooters, playing football at the park. Things just get left here, there and everywhere in the garage. Sometimes old habits are hard to break.

My worst clutter area is the kitchen/living room (we have an open space). If there is a bit of counter area, coffee table area, end table area, there is something on it. It drives me CRAZY. And worse it drives my oh-so tidy hubby nuts. :) Please enter me in this giveaway. When we come home the mail is deposited on the kitchen island and books are put on the coffee table. It just goes on and on.

Paper clutter is the hardest. I type this as I am currently surrounded by a sea of paper that I have been trying to organized for the last few days. Prior to this it was all in a huge rubbermaid container and I know how much Laura loves containers but I don’t think she’d want the containers to be used to hide clutter! :)

I need to de-clutter ever aspect of my life. Starting with my home. The entire house is filled with clutter, it was never this way, everything was somewhat organized. I have 4 children so it is never clutter free or organized. But when I became ill. My world turned upside down, within that time I faced alot of challenges, and now I am trying to pick up the pieces. I have learned it’s easy to fall but extremely difficult to pick yourself back up!!! I am desperate to find a solution.

I would say the bedroom, which seems to stay in a constant state of disarray, but that can be easily rectified. The hardest room for me to maintain is my “office.” I think it may be because there is no defined “look” or purpose to it – it’s simply called an office whereas its actual definition is “catch-all.”

My office! It is the one area that tends to gather clutter. We went from a beautifully built in home office in our home, moved cross country to a home without one, and oh how I miss it! It seems the easiest to drop the ball on too….sigh. I miss my built ins!

The hardest area for my to keep de-cluttered is my closet. It’s a (small) walk-on one. When I don’t know where to put something, I put it there. About twice a year, I wind up having to spend an entire afternoon removing everything and de-cluttering it.

  • Naidre

I am a single mom of an almost 4 year old. Need I say more? I have always had a clutter issue, and it has always caused me to feel stress and shame. I am usually able to keep up a semblance of order in my living room, but the other rooms are really a problem. So much so that I am usually discouraged from getting in there in clearing becasue it is ‘too hard’. When I do attack it, I am always surprised how it wasn’t so bad, and promise myself to never let it get out of hand again. Over and over. I would really like to be a grown up that is able to manage my stuff. I am tired of being ashamed.

My office/craft room is the hardest place for me to keep cleaned and organized. Not only is this room prone to clutter due to all the little pieces need for both of its function, its also at the very back of the house. Paper filing… I’ve got it sorted. The to act on pile, the shred pile, the to be filed pile. The to be filed pile gets larger and larger… until it falls over and then I must do something about it. Maybe the problem isn’t the pile but where I am supposed to file it… because that space is no where near where I sort it.

The quick answer for me would be the whole house. It seems like we are NEVER able to get a room clean and then keep it clean. A more accurate answer would be the bedroom. We always have hampers full of dirty clothes and baskets full of clean clothes that never seem to get put away before w have to wear them.

my kitchen feels like a hopeless task. I just can’t keep up with the stuff piling up!

  • Kara

The hardest spot for me is the multi-purpose basement….the office desk buired under paper, the craft table buried with supplies, the guest bed covered with school stuff that needs to be organized. We can’t have overnight company unless they like couches for beds. ;)

  • Kari

The worst place for clutter in our house is the kitchen counter, it is the place where everything that comes in the front door lands…and it seems to take hours to find homes for the things that pile up there.

The hardest areas in my house to keep organized and clean from clutter are the kitchen island and the kitchen desk. They become a dump everything area. And I’ve noticed that I’ve had the out of sight out of mind mentality with important items these days. Thus, the reason for the dump areas due to my kids and I. Ugh~

I have a problem with papers, mainly at my homeoffice. They cause most of the clutter in this house.

  • Linda

my office/desk area is the hardest for me – everything gets dropped there to be dealt with lagter

  • Lindahistreasure

Paper is the biggest issue. Next is not having a place where I can have a yard sale. Living in a condo is restrictive.

  • Michelle Tajchman

I have plenty of areas! My dining room/ kitchen where all the papers come in to our house is the one I’m staring at right now. Would love to win/ read this book!

  • Cneriq1974

Well having 5 kids and a hubbie I guess every where is cluttered. I was checking out your book at a book store and would love to have my own copy. I have a hard time getting rid of things and you have some great techniques. Either way it is a great book and will help the lucky winners.

  • Whitney Baugh

    My desk, for sure.

  • http://www.oahumom.com Lisa @ Oahu Mom

The paper piles are the hardest for me to organize. Not always sure what to keep or where to keep it.

  • RandROK

Sadly, my bedroom. I think it is one of the worsts rooms in our house. Isn’t the bedroom supposed to be a sexy and relaxing place to go?! Not at my house!!

  • Tara C.

My kitchen cart is my catch all for mail, pens, kids drawings etc. Definitely my hardest area to keep clutter free!

  • christina

Both paper and my kids toys are the hardest for me. I have heard so many good things about this book, thanks for the chance!

  • Randomrecycling

My hardest area is the “mail table” which is a catch all for all the stuff that comes into the house on a daily basis.

  • Christen R

My dining room is a dumping area – computer room, craft area, papers & bills, etc. It is a home for things that have no home.

  • Jennifer

I have trouble organizing other people’s stuff…like the stuff my husband brings home from work or the “treasures” my kids must keep.

  • Lindsay

My desk area is always hard to keep organized. Too many papers!

  • Hsmom7

I would have to say the basement… Our school room is down there, a play area, laundry and storage. Things seem to get “dumped” down there when they are out of place upstairs. I am really wanting to de-clutter the basement, including books, which is the hardest for me.

  • Onehope3

The hardest area for me is paper clutter. I am haunted by it. It makes me anxious and steals me joy.

  • Bernice

“My” areas – it’s easy to declutter everyone else’s stuff but when it comes to my stuff, EVERYTHING has sentimental value apparently. I have serious pack-rat issues.

My office. I have paper everywhere, recipes, interesting articles, etc. I have tried to use binders, but them I run out of room for them. I tried keeping stuff on the comouter, but I have one crash last year and everything went with it.

  • Maggie

The hardest part of my house to organize is my desk – there are way too many papers and things just sitting on the top waiting to be organized. :(

  • Samantha

My Kitchen bench. It’s an ongoing nightmare!! No matter how many times I clean it off, it quickly becomes the dumping area for anything I don’t want to deal with straight away. It is my own personal nemesis!!

We’ve got a spare bedroom, which turns into the place to put random junk. Definitely a problem, especially since it’s filling up. Yikes.

The hardest area for me is the laundry room. It is right when we come in from the garage and we put mail etc on the counter and it gets so cluttered. I hate it and need help.

hmmm, pick just one…then I pick my office, ugh, just the thought of it is depressing. Really need to tackle it but not sure how to REALLY solve the problem. There have been “fixes” but they haven’t lasted. Need this book!

  • Sarah

The back of our couch looks like we’re trying to convert it into an office. Oh, and the laundry room looks like a war zone. And did I mention that our bedroom is (evidently) doubling as a storage unit? Yeah…I could definitely use some help :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/missycd Missy Crystal Dolphin

I would have to say my whole house. The garage is filled mostly with stuff needing to be dealt with, I have stuff on stuff on stuff. Walking through is like an obstacle course most of the time. There are UFPs (un-finished projects [not just craft projects]) everywhere you look and it is not just me, it is the husband and the kids too.

  • DeAnn

Does “everywhere” count? Any area that has a flat surface is the hardest for us to keep organized.

I need help in my whole house, but really want to work on my bedroom, to create a room of calm, amid the house of clutter.

  • June

This would be wonderul! Honestly, I don’t think I have 1 hardest spot…our foyer, livingroom, kitchen, and bedroom suffer tremendously! It’s horrble! I’m a fairly new mom (8 months old!) and I was always a messy person. I was just starting to really get a handle on things when my daughter was born…and now it’s really bad. I need help, for sure. I feel like I’m failing -to an extent- at being a good wife & mother. I have to get a handle on things before my daughter is old enough to learn my bad habits & ….before I have another baby! Oh my!

It’s definitely my “BEDROOM”, My son (7) and I live with my mom and grandmother in her home. I’ve had to squeeze the majority of our lives into my bedroom, it’s packed like a storage unit and the remainder is stuck in the garage. I need some serious helpful ideas to become clutter free. I’m so glad I’ve found your page today!! Thank you.

  • Allison

My coffee table. Because it’s not just a coffee table; it’s a desk, a dining table, a mail drop, and the brain center of my home. I do everything there, probably so I can watch DVR’ed episodes of Jersey Shore while I’m doing it. (So shameful. Look away.)

  • Jody

Garage! I organize it, but it goes right back to being cluttered.

My nemesis is PAPER! I seem to accumulate paper on a daily basis…bills, ideas, receipts, patterns, tutorials, lists…. It just never seems to get any smaller.

  • Mcpris214

The area that gets me every time is the office. It seems like all the things that don’t have a place, end up there. To be honest my whole house needs help and so do I! help!

  • http://imanadultwhendidthishappen.wordpress.com/ Kim

My bedroom is the worst but my office/crafty area is not good either. Almost everyone in my family is a pack rat!

  • Caroline

The hardest places for me to organize in my home..Garage and also my closets. I seem to put things in those locations for “future organization” and then get overwhelmed by the piles and fear of tackling them sets in.

  • Anonymous

My absolutely most difficult area to organize at this time is my son’s room and things. He will be 2 in May, and as our first born, we are hanging on to everything in hopes we will have another before long. All of his clothes and toys are difficult for me to keep up with – especially when he grows into a new size!

  • erica

my entire house! I work, take care of elderly family members, and I am rasing my two daughters. So organizing the house falls by the way side but creates so many troubles down the road.

Great tips! I’d add that getting an accountability buddy is a great step too. I’ve found them to be a great help. They can keep you on track with your big goals and kick you in the butt if you’re slacking off (or gently ask what’s going on, it’s however you set it up).

    • http://twitter.com/WorkingNaked Lisa Kanarek

That’s a great idea. I have some friends who would have no trouble letting me know I’m slacking off. Of course, they’d expect me to do the same thing to them.

  • http://www.giglogo.com Karla Campos

Hi Lisa, great post and one which I was in desperate need to read. I am the type of person who gets bored quickly so I find that game playing works wonders for me, I am going to try your 10 minute technique above it sounds sensible.

    • http://twitter.com/WorkingNaked Lisa Kanarek

I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who gets bored easily! Also, it doesn’t take much to distract me, so when I work in 10-minute segments, I’m able to get more things done. I’ll probably wear out my egg timer by the end of the year! :)

  • Mullenann4

I love your title, but I sit on my butt all day. Joke. Honestly you have some great ideas here. I have done the 10 minute thing when I had a kitchen full of dirty counters that I had put off. I’d just do one little bitty spot and tell myself when that was done, I could quit. What usually happened was I did the whole kitchen. It would look good for part of a day. Then when it was terrible, I’d do the one bitty spot trick again. You’d think I’d learn, wouldn’t you?

  • http://www.thecoffeehousecoach.com Arthur Tassinello

Exactly Lisa. If I have a
long list (typically) I do a few easy ones to make the list shorter and
makes me feel better. Then I have to tackle the big one (like your
Power Point) and just get a mindset of, that is all I will do for the
day or longer until it is complete. One other note: some of the lesser
projects or to do’s sometimes resolve themselves with no effort. And
lastly try not to handle any new info or mail (physical or e type) more
than once. 4 choices 1) address it immediately, 2) trash it, 3) turn it
over to someone else, 4) put it in a tomorrow pile (just don’t do this
one with everything, that’s defeating the purpose.

    • http://twitter.com/WorkingNaked Lisa Kanarek

I always like it when to-dos resolve themselves. It doesn’t happen often, but it’s nice when it does. Your 4 choices for handling new information are right on target and can make it easy to clear off your desk every day.
